😱The Thylacine Is Almost Back From Extinction!

Anddd...VANTARA is amazing!

A 108-year-old Tasmanian tiger (Thylacinus cynocephalus) skull with fragments of skin still attached. This is not the specimen referred to throughout this article.

The Thylacine is ALMOST BACK FROM EXTINCTION! Scientists from Colossal Biosciences have just completed the most complete genome of this amazing animal, using a 110-year-old pickled head preserved in ethanol. The best part? The genome is more than 99.9% complete, with JUST 45 gaps left to fill. Thanks to this, scientists can now explore the thylacine’s biology, including what it could taste, smell, and how its brain worked. They even found RNA, which helps understand which genes were active when it was alive, that’s pretty damn wild!

But it gets even better. Colossal Biosciences is using fat-tailed dunnarts, tiny marsupials that are closely related to the thylacine, as surrogates to carry thylacine embryos. They’re also developing a world-first artificial uterus to grow marsupial embryos, including thylacines, from start to mid-pregnancy. This could change everything for conservation.

So, could we really see the return of the thylacine? With a genome nearly complete and cutting-edge tech, the answer is looking like a HUGE YES. To find out more, check out the article below!

VANTARA, located in India—and this is just a fraction of the place!

Imagine a billionaire building the world’s largest conservation project—and we’re not talking about your average zoo. Meet Anant Ambani, the visionary behind VANTARA, a 3,000-acre sanctuary—that's four times the size of Central Park—dedicated to abused, injured, and endangered animals.

This place has it all: gharials, mugger crocs, Asian elephants, leopards and tigers affected by human-wildlife conflict, and even the infamous cocaine hippos from Colombia. It's a wildlife haven like no other. Ambani’s team has brought in top wildlife experts from around the globe to ensure the best care possible for these animals. And guess what? Our very own brologist had the chance to visit, and he was blown away. This place is beyond your wildest dreams.

Thurman the Hermit Crab!

In the last newsletter, we talked about how the Brofessor got “gifted” a pet hermit crab, and how Jett Cox agreed to take him to be his new dad. Since then, Thurman has been doing really well! He recently upgraded shells, and been really active! Jet took him down to the beach a couple times and he loved it. Thurman has also been eating a huge variety of food, and he’s been crushing it all! We all love a good Thurman update!
